Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ)

What is Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ)?

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice (EDIJ) is a framework that helps us create an environment where differences are celebrated, barriers to a flourishing education system are removed, and issues such as racial injustice and inequality are actively recognised and addressed.
Our commitment to EDIJ is closely intertwined with our three values of Community, Compassion and Courage, and our vision of, “Growing Together, Guided by Love.” Together, these principles shape an environment where every individual is valued, respected and supported to flourish. They encourage us to build a strong sense of community, show compassion towards the experiences and needs of others, and have the courage to challenge unfairness, inequality and discrimination.
Equity means ensuring that everyone has access to the support and opportunities they need to succeed, recognising that different children may need different kinds of help. Through compassion, we seek to understand and respond to individual needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow and flourish.
Diversity recognises and celebrates the richness of differences between people, including culture, race, gender, ability, faith and background. Our sense of community is strengthened when we value and respect these differences, recognising that we all have something unique to contribute.
Inclusion means creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to participate fully. Guided by love, we seek to create a community where everyone feels they belong, can be themselves and is supported to grow together.
Justice involves acting to challenge unfairness, discrimination and inequality so that all members of our community are treated fairly. This requires courage: the courage to recognise injustice, to speak up when something is wrong and to take meaningful action to create positive change.
In this way, Community, Compassion and Courage, alongside our motto “Growing Together, Guided by Love,” are at the heart of our commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice, helping us to create a community where everyone is valued, supported and able to flourish.

How do we implement EDIJ at RBK Federation?

At RBK Federation, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ) is embedded within our culture, curriculum and daily practice. Our approach is underpinned by our core values of Community, Compassion and Courage and our motto, “Growing Together, Guided by Love.” Through these principles, we seek to ensure that every member of our community feels valued, respected, included and able to flourish.
We achieve this through:
A diverse and representative curriculum
We provide a diverse and representative curriculum through the use of books, resources and learning materials that reflect a wide range of cultures, identities, backgrounds and lived experiences. This enables children to see themselves and their experiences represented within their learning, while also developing an understanding of, and respect for, the wider world.
Inclusive classroom environments
Our classrooms and wider learning environments are rooted in love, kindness, honesty and respect. We establish clear expectations that discriminatory, prejudiced or disrespectful language and behaviour are not tolerated. This creates safe and inclusive spaces where all children feel valued, listened to and confident to express their ideas, ask questions and explore differences.
Equitable teaching approaches
We use a range of teaching, learning and assessment approaches to respond to the diverse needs, experiences and starting points of our children. Through adaptive and inclusive practice, we seek to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate fully and achieve their potential.
Strong, positive relationships between pupils, staff and families are central to this approach. We prioritise a culture in which every child knows that they are valued, listened to and cared for, providing the foundation for our commitment to “Growing Together, Guided by Love.”
Strong links with families and the wider community
We value the contribution of our families and wider community and seek meaningful opportunities for individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths and experiences to share their knowledge, traditions and perspectives. These relationships enrich our children's learning, broaden their understanding of the world and strengthen our sense of community.
Whole-school celebrations and initiatives
We recognise and celebrate cultural events, significant occasions and themed days or weeks that promote understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity. These opportunities are used to deepen children's knowledge and understanding and to encourage curiosity, compassion and respect for the experiences of others.
Pupil voice and agency
Through our Oracy work, which underpins and is embedded throughout our curriculum, children are provided with meaningful opportunities to share their experiences, perspectives and ideas. We actively encourage children to listen to and learn from different viewpoints, develop confidence in expressing themselves and understand the importance of having their voices heard.
Pupil leadership
Children are empowered to take an active role in shaping our EDIJ work through established pupil leadership ambassador groups. Through their half-termly missions, pupils are given opportunities to identify priorities, raise awareness, promote inclusion and contribute to positive change across the Federation. This develops a sense of responsibility and community while encouraging children to demonstrate courage in addressing issues of fairness and inclusion.

What are the benefits of an EDIJ focus?

Improved learning outcomes
When children feel valued, respected and included, they are more likely to develop confidence, motivation and engagement in their learning. Removing barriers and providing equitable opportunities enables all children to participate and achieve their potential.
Stronger social and emotional development
Developing an understanding of different cultures, identities, experiences and perspectives supports children to develop empathy, compassion, respect and positive relationships with others. It helps children to recognise and value both their similarities and differences.
Preparation for life in modern Britain
An EDIJ approach equips children with the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to participate positively and confidently in a diverse, interconnected society. It supports children to understand difference, challenge prejudice and inequality, and contribute positively to their communities.
A stronger and more positive school community
A commitment to EDIJ helps us to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in which pupils, staff, families and the wider community feel respected, supported and that they belong. By living out our values of Community, Compassion and Courage, we strive to ensure that everyone has a valued place within our Federation and that we are all growing together, guided by love.
